Big Job News
Last Tuesday I had a pretty hard day at work with some stuff going on with a project that I had been pulled into. After hours and hours of coding and such, it was getting to the end of the day and I was looking forward to a reprieve with my planned trip to Bourbon Steak with my friends. The phone rings, and I'm not sure of the name on the display, but I figure it's one of the folks over in the sponsoring division and they have a question or want to report something in one of the programs that I need to look at.
I pick up the phone and the woman identifies herself as being from HR. Already that makes me wonder what is going on. She continues and tells me that she would like to make an official job offer for the supervisors position that I had applied for.
I nearly fell out of my chair.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I was actually being offered the supervisors job. This was completely out of the blue for sure because my bosses had been tight-lipped about the recommendations they had made or if they had even heard anything about the decision from the higher-ups and HR.
I asked if I could give my decision by tomorrow (I needed time to process this). She was fine with that, but wanted to know by morning. I put the phone down, and proceeded to try and actually start breathing again, because I still could not believe it. Once I got my mind cleared, I started rationalizing what had just happened, but I still couldn't believe it.
I could have waited until morning to say yes (which is what the back of my mind was screaming anyway) but I said screw it and decided to call back HR and give them my answer. Could that have been bad form? Perhaps, but considering they had originally wanted to get my choice immediately, I didn't think they would mind. I got to the voicemail of the contact person and left a voicemail letting them know I would accept. Five minutes later she called me back to confirm my decision.
So from here on out, I will now be in a supervisory role in my department at work. For me that means I will be taking the lead on certain projects, but also overseeing someone in their roles. I admit that it has been a while since I have been in this capacity, but I will work to learn and do the best I can. I don't think I would have been picked if my bosses didn't think I could do well at it.
It still feels a bit surreal though, but I will get used to it in time. With this, it certainly was the reason why the timing of going to Bourbon Steak was perfect, getting to celebrate at a nice place with good friends.

Out of Left Field
So for the past year we have been in talks with St. James and toying with being a merged congregation. This has included shared worship services and social events, and getting to know one another. There have also been a number of meetings, both shared and apart, with consultants about the merger and what the next steps are. It hasn't always been easy either, along the way we have discovered that there are some differences that needed to be worked on, both within ourselves and with one another. One such item was having children participate in worship. Not everyone was comfortable with the idea that the kids were helping with the elevation of the bread and wine or with reading parts of the Great Thanksgiving. Also there would be those kids who were being kids so they would get noisy or wander and such, and while it wasn't minded so much at one chapel, it was a potential problem in another (think carpet vs hardwood floor and the noise level) so there was that issue to work out.
Another issue was the perception that not all members were so accepting of the GLBT folks that attended. Now I can't say I witnessed any of that personally, but there were folks who hinted that they had issues. I don't know for sure though, I think one or two of the stories were folks who were being so hypersensitive about perceived slights that they were quick to take offense.
But anyway, so there was a lot of work being done on the part of both parishes, and especially by the Merger Exploration Team. If anything they were making sure to keep us up to date as often as possible about what was going on.
So ultimately the final decision was looming. On December 14, each Vestry was going to meet and vote to decide whether to merge, or to end the process, or even extend the process if a bit more time was needed for some reason. Imagine my surprise today when I got this letter from my priest informing us that the St. James Vestry had met to see where they were in the merger process, and decided to vote to end the process now rather than wait until December 14.
This was not what I was expecting. I had not gotten the sense that folks from St. James were done with this process a bit ahead of time, and that they would decide to just let St. James close and leave rather than merge with St. Georges and keep going as a new entity. However, I can also understand some of the reasoning behind their decision. This process has taken a lot of work this past year, and when it has been the same people who have been involved throughout the process, it can lead to burnout, and I suspect that is a bit of what happened here. Still, I don't think this was a waste of our time either because it gave both parishes a lot of insight as to what was going on and how things could be different. St. Georges was probably coming due for a bit of a shakeup anyway because we have been coasting along for a few years now, and now we have some knowledge of where we are falling flat and could stand to fix.
I certainly hope that we made folks from St. James feel welcome enough that they will decide to come over to St. Georges. They were certainly gracious to us, especially when we were doing the play last month. There was a potential conflict with some dates, and they saved us a lot of trouble by letting us use their parish hall for a weekend of performances.
So from here on out, who knows what could happen or where God is calling us, but God certainly has a reason for why things have happened the way they did, and hopefully we can figure out how to take that experience and use it in a positive way.

The Original Point
I really should reconsider writing a blog entry at 1 in the morning, not because it fails to make sense, but sometimes if I am tired enough I completely go off of the original point.
In "Companion vs Self" I was discussing the fact that I had extra tickets to events, and that perhaps that wasn't always the wisest move. The main point for me is that I got way into the mindset that when I go to events, I go with someone, so I end up buying two tickets to things. I shouldn't be that way. At this point, it is perfectly acceptable to go to some events alone and I should remember that and only buy one ticket.
Maybe that's why I haven't stayed single for long. I sabotage myself because for some things I expect to go with someone instead of by myself. No more, I am breaking that habit. I will take more consideration into an event and connclude if its fine to go it alone or take a friend.

Something New
Now I notice they have a few classes from 7:45 PM to 9:00 PM, a perfect time for me since I can get home, relax a bit, change, and then walk to the studio.
So I am going to add yoga to my routine, and I hope they are able to stay open. If you're in the area, I hope you'll consider joining up.

Random Stuff
I went out to Cobalt Friday night before heading to a friends house to watch the debate. Brian and I have had many a discussion in the past about the bear happy hour. As much as the bears bitch about the fact that the "typical" gay is very cliquish, they can be just as bad. Most of the guys that walk in on Friday night tend to come in as couples or as groups, and many of them are familiar with one another. If you ever watch, you'll see they tend to form their groups and hang out in their one spot, not moving much except to get another drink, or perhaps move along to join another group. It can be a bit fascinating for a people watcher.
However, when you're there by yourself, it can feel rather intimidating to be there. It has occurred to me that I have become a bit shy about meeting people when I am out and about. Perhaps I am getting a vibe while there that people are not approachable, or perhaps I am just not reading people correctly. Hell, it could even be the setting I am in, being in a bar and all. I really can't make excuses though, I recognize that I have become shy, and that is not like me. It is something I need to work on, and only I can fix it. However, it will do me no good to go to the other extreme and become too friendly, because that will lead to trouble.
Its a matter of re-learning how to read people, and also to learn limits again. I tend to shy away because I am trying to be polite, and perhaps I am being too polite.
However, I also can't bitch, the people that I do know and call my friend, they're people worth calling a friend.
I will do this, I will get over this.
Clearly "Christmas Creep" is starting to affect people in more ways than just seeing stuff at an inappropriate time, there are folks who have asked about what I am doing for Christmas. Hell, to be honest, I have no idea right now, nor am I thinking about it. If I was going to consider anything at the moment, it might be to hang with a friend since he mentioned the other night that this will be his first Christmas he is not going home, which is also very odd for him because his birthday is on Christmas Eve. Either way, I will cross that bridge when it gets here.

Sabbatical
Despite the fact that JH and I broke up a few months ago, we have continued to remain good friends, as evidenced by the recent travels. However, since we have been hanging out, there has been that bit of tension there since we were once a couple. I admit that despite it all, I still had feelings for JH.
Recently JH approached me about getting back together. I held off because I wasn't sure I wanted to get back with him, plus due to some of the reasons behind the breakup, I questioned his motives. I wanted to be sure it was JH who wanted me back because he wanted to be with me and not because it was him being jealous that I had been seeing other people. He wasn't happy with the fact that I kept on questioning him, but I just needed to know it.
Last weekend it all came to a head, and what it came down to was "Are you going to be with me, or not, because I am not going to wait around forever for an answer." I'm sitting there and I am trying to sort out what I am feeling because I want him back but I am not completely ready to say yes. Yet I ultimately said I wanted to be back together.
So there, we were a couple again, but something still didn't feel right. A few days later we had another conversation, and JH said "Are you absolutely sure you want to have a relationship?" and I said yes, thinking that I did. I wanted to be with JH because we had a good thing going on and I thought we could make it work again.
Then I woke up the next morning and one of my first thoughts was "Mangi, what the fuck are you doing? You're not ready for this, you're going to lose your independence." Finally it came out as to just what it was that was bothering me.
When I was single again, I relished being completely independent. As my parents can tell you, I have always had a streak of wanting to be independent and do things on my own. After JS but before JH, I had actually learned that I was fine with being on my own, I could do it without a problem. I liked it when I could do what I wanted, when I wanted, and I didn't have to answer to someone over what I was doing and/or what I wanted to do. Now don't get me wrong in that I liked doing things with JH because we had very similar interests and could find stuff that was mutually satisfying, I just happened to re-discover selfishness and I liked it.
So now I am in this quandry, I like being with JH, but I also like my independence. How to resolve this? Well let's be honest, there isn't really a good way to do that right now, especially because being in a relationship means that no, you can't just do what you want, and yes, you won't just automatically get your own way.
I tell about this to one of my friends, and he proceeds to lay a verbal smack upside the head as to what I was doing, and he threw to me some advice, which will come up later.
So now its the matter of how do I explain this to JH? For the next few days I would agonize over this because I knew this was a potential minefield, plus I was kicking myself because in my mind, I screwed up big time, and JH would have every right to be angry and not want anything to do with me, and I would have deserved it. In the meantime, I was also cautious around him, not trying to overly flirt or whatever because if it came to that we needed to step back and just be friends, I didn't want to lead him on and therefore make things worse.
Finally tonight I just admitted to everything that was bothering me. Surprisingly enough JH wasn't mad at me, and was rather understanding. He had picked up something was not right from me, and he was just waiting for me to admit that I wasn't ready for a relationship. He doesn't want to be in a relationship if I am having doubts about being able to commit, and I don't blame him, I wouldn't want to be in that either. He doesn't hate me and still wants to be friends. In fact, we're attending the Ravens vs Browns game tomorrow, so I should be in bed now, but I had to get this out.
Anyway, in the meantime however I am taking the advice of my friend. I am taking a hiatus from dating right now. I still want to hang out with friends, meet new people and such, but I am not actively seeking to date or even just get some. I am going to take time for myself and do just what it is that I want, and also learn more about just what it is I want out of my life and my relationships. I know I will be better for it.

I Can Do This
I am not going to let that happen this time.
Clearly fate is trying to tempt me though. Since it is hell week with rehearsals, it means that I am going straight from work to rehearsal and not getting out until late. The perfect example is this evening. I did not leave the church until 11:30 PM, so it was a long night. However, the first thing I said to myself was "Go home and do your pushups." I did them as soon as I got home.
In the past I might have tried to let it slide because it was "too late." I am not going to fall victim to the usual trap, I am going to complete this program and I am going to successfully complete it.
It doesn't hurt that I am seeing results from it. I noticed today my biceps are more toned, they're back to where they were when I was lifting weights for a summer in college. This is good because now they will get even better. I already mentioned that I notice a difference in my chest, and I know that will get better as well.
When I complete 100 pushups, I will be moving onward to other bodybuilding exercises I can do at home. Either I will reach the point that I can do a lot of exercises at home and don't really need a gym (or expensive equipment) or I will get the discipline that I can switch over to going to a gym and getting my full money's worth. We'll see what happens.

Good News for Me
For those who don't know, last year when I had my cholesterol tested, I had a high level of triglycerides, and my HDL (good) cholesterol was low. That for me is a warning sign that I could develop Hyperlipidemia Type IIb and since I would not like to die of a heart attack in 30 years or less, it meant taking steps to see if I could bring the cholesterol under control. Diet and exercise changes were the big things, because as I have said before, I do not want to go on pills.
Well it looks like the lifestyle changes are working because things are more normal
Normal Ranges:
Cholesterol: 100-200
HDL: 40-59
LDL: 0-100
Triglycerides: <150
Old Results:
Cholesterol: 137
HDL: 37
LDL: 59
Triglycerides: 207
New Results:
Cholesterol: 141
HDL: 42
LDL: 71
Triglycerides: 141
So from what I can see, I dropped my triglycerides 66 points, which is great. I have raised the HDL to where it should be, and stayed within a good range for the overall cholesterol. I am thinking the LDL is a little higher than I want it to be, but that can be fixed. I know I can improve on the lifestyle stuff, and so I'll keep on doing what I am doing, and a bit more.

Sweet, It's Working
I took a look in the mirror and I can see he's right. I notice the love handles are smaller than what they were a year or so ago. It looks to me that the investment in the ab workout DVD's are paying off at this point.
What I'm most proud of is that I am accomplishing this through good old-fashioned diet and exercise. No surgery, no pills, and certainly not one of the trendy diets that are out there. I have many good reasons for wanting to get in the habit of a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. The biggest one is for my overall health, especially with the family history of high cholesterol. Last year was a small reminder that it could happen to me when I tested with good overall cholesterol, but low HDL "good" cholesterol" and high triglycerides. The last thing I want to have to do is take drugs to control the cholesterol and destroy my liver in the process so it's all about the lifestyle changes.
There is one place where I will give myself credit, I've basically stayed within my same weight range since high school, between 180-190 lbs. I want to keep it that way, at least in terms of that if I do gain more weight, it's because I gain muscle and not fat.
Between this and the biking, I should be one healthy person by the end of this summer, provided the heat and humidity don't attempt to kill me later on. Thanks to a screaming deal on woot.com, I now own a heart rate monitor, so I can track just how I'm doing.

Spring Cleaning
So being as it was my day off, it was a perfect day to get rid of crap from my closets and reorganize. I went through the pantry, linen closet, bedroom closets, and basement storage unit and took a look. I also created a box that was designated as stuff that I was going to give to the church yard sale (or charity in the case of the food).
So I went through all of them and basically cut out a good number of items. A box full of AV and computer cords was cut in half, I got rid of four pairs of pants that had grown too short for me, and I got rid of just a lot of stuff that was taking up space. All in all, about 3 plastic bins have gone to the yard sale, and two bags of food went to charity. I do have a few more items that will go to the yard sale later, including some DVD's that I don't really watch anymore.
Here's examples of my work:

Back into Routine
It's mostly the exercise where I have fallen off, for a while it was too cold to go running or biking, and so I moved indoors, but then somewhere along the way I just fell out of habit. Part of it was not changing things up enough, and part of it was allowing me to be distracted by other stuff, such as deciding to watch a movie.
It was good of me to ride my bike yesterday, yeah I was out of breath, but I felt good overall, and there was a pleasure in knowing that I was offsetting some of the calories from the food I was going to consume later at the Superbowl party. That's what I need to focus on, that I can offset what I eat during the day. Of course, that doesn't mean I can just pig out on junk either ;-) I have started reading nutrition labels and ingredient lists closely to decide on what to purchase and how much to have. I think if I were to step on a scale, I would basically be maintaining my weight. Of course the real number I want to check on is whether I have been dropping body fat. The health unit at work is doing the analysis next week, I think I'll schedule myself to go down there.
My ultimate goal is to find that I have improved my triglyceride numbers. I'll know that sometime in April. I just need to stick with this, and I know I can. Once I can make exercise a habit, then I'll join a gym, but not before then.

Resolutions
But since everyone is talking about it, here's what I'll lay down as my current and future resolutions:
1. Continue to eat healthy and exercise more: This is rather simple for me because I have been more conscious of what I eat for the last 3-4 months, and I can already see a difference. I am exercising more, and I will continue to do so throughout the year. It is my goal to become disciplined to an exercise routine enough that I can buy a membership to the local gym and actually use it rather than waste it.
2. Travel More: Make no bones about it, I love to travel and see new places. I don't think I have been doing enough of it in the last two years so I am resolving to do as much as I possibly can. I know that there will be a few months where it will be crazy-difficult to travel because of work obligations, but I will find a way. It also doesn't hurt that JH and I are discussing making trips to various parks for rollercoaster riding. It is nice to have someone that will go with you on the rollercoasters, it will give me someone to talk to while waiting in line ;-)
3. Have Fun: After a rather tumultuous 2007 for the first nine months, things are settled down and it's time to have a blast. I got a good taste of what I could be doing this past summer and fall, and it's time to expand on it. I'm young, and this is my time to party and enjoy the life that is before me.
That's it, it's all I really need to have for the new year. I can't wait to see what is in store because I get the feeling that 2008 is going to be a great year for me.

A Fun Mental Break...And News
So Tuesday night after work I went out to see JH, and finally got to see his house. We went out and had dinner at Annies, and saw the Christmas lights display at the Capitol building. After Annies we went over to D.I.K. and I met a few of Joe's friends. It was also karaoke night and there were lots of holiday songs, so I decided to sign up and sing my favorite song, "Sleigh Ride." I actually don't consider that song a "holiday" song, it's really a "winter" song since there's no reference to holidays so it could be sung at any time in the winter. Anyway, I certainly got the bar going as JH can attest. Eventually we headed home since I was pretty worn out, and so was he.
Wednesday we were up late, and headed over to the Baltimore Aquarium. I have to give Baltimore credit for having good pricing on their light rail system and a decent schedule. If I need to go into the city and it's not to visit Rob and Dan, I'll just take that instead of driving in. I have never been to the aquarium in Baltimore, so I wasn't sure what to expect. JH has been there in the past, so he could see a difference in exhibits; he had not seen the Australia exhibit, so that was something new for him. After a few hours (and plenty of pictures to be posted later) we headed into Little Italy for dinner. We shared calamari and I enjoyed a pesto pasta while he had a sampler trio of dishes.
As we headed back to the light rail, we decided to cut through the indoor mall at the inner harbor when some sale tags caught JH's eye at the local sports store. They were discounting a number of Ravens jerseys so we went in, since I was looking for a more authentic jersey. There was one that was a steal (Marked down to $60 from $100) and it was a mix of replica and authentic (numbers were sewn on, etc.), but it was too big for me. However, they were selling replica jerseys for $65, so I ended up picking up a Todd Heap jersey, which I wore to work today.
Light railed back to North Linthicum, and then a ride back to Greenbelt. It was there that a serious discussion was had and some decisions were made. I've been dating JH for the last seven weeks, and I've enjoyed the time I spent with him. I've been taking things slow with him and really working to get to know him because I wanted to see very clearly what he was like. I have had a bad habit of moving too fast into getting serious before I really got to know the person, and I paid for it big time. This time I decided I was going to keep things casual and if it panned out, great, if not, move on. Well JH is still here, he respected the fact that I wanted to take things slow, and he has not put any pressure on me. He's cute, we have things in common, and he's pretty easygoing, so really, the last seven weeks have gone well. We see one another about every five to six days and that works for us, we like being with one another, but we also like having our own time and space. I'm saying all of this because I've decided to make things a bit more serious and be his boyfriend. That's right dear readers, I'm off the market. I like him, he likes me, let's see where it goes :-)

Changing up Exercise
I've been slacking a bit about the diet and exercise but I'm climbing back on the wagon in some creative ways at least. For the diet I'm just making sure to push up the vegetable consumption. Lately for breakfast I've been on a kick of eating a toasted bagel with organic peanut butter. The reason for the organic stuff is because it doesn't contain any hydrogenated oils in it. Actually I find I like the natural stuff better.
I'm still working with the boot camp DVD's, which are helpful, but since I can't run, I need something to do for cardio. I'd consider a gym but I am waiting on that until I have more of the discipline to stick to a routine of exercise, because clearly with the fact that until tonight I hadn't done any major exercise for about a week, I am not there yet.
Some of you might laugh at what I now do for cardio, but it seems to be working. I dance, in this case, using DDR: Mario Mix. I was able to find a copy that came with the pad on Ebay and picked it up. Take about 20-30 minutes on that and the game calculates that I burn at least 200 calories, I think it's a bit more since they're basing it on the number of arrows I hit, but I'm doing more than just standing there and tapping the arrows with my foot. Once I've mastered this game, I'll pick up the new DDR for the Wii since my old pad is compatible with it, plus if the game allows for both types of pads at once, it could mean some friendly competition around here *evil grin*
What I can say is that I've noticed that my body is being re-shaped, and that's what I'm going for, to drop some of the fat off and flatten some areas out. The resistance training is helping with my arms, and I know once I am more disciplined, I'll move on to weight training, but for now, this is what is working.
Besides, it's nice when your pants feel loose :-) I'm debating if I will go as far as to run a half marathon just yet, I may push it back until later in the year, when I've had more time to train.

Twenty-Four to Twenty-Five
The first quarter of the year started out fairly normal. I did get a Nintendo Wii, which turned out to be one of the best purchases I made. I love playing it, and now with a Gamefly account, I'm able to try games for as long as I want before buying them. Work would have a moment of upheaval as one of my co-workers who was also a good friend of mine decided to leave. It meant that I took over a majority of the projects he was working on. This left me in a moment of panic because one project was written in Visual Basic, and I had never touched VB, so it meant that I had to give myself a crash course in VB so that I could take on this project and keep it going. As it turned out, I did just fine, and in fact would later solve a major problem plaguing this application, which will save hours of headaches for field reps and tech support alike.
Second quarter, that's when things all changed. It started with a trip to Connecticut to visit my family, with side trips to NYC and Boston. Those were fun, but it also spelled the end of my relationship with Mike as some of his behaviors forced me to face some realities. I broke up with him in early May, with the intention to just be roommates since it was easier financially. However, this wouldn't happen.
This summer I met the man who would bring out a number of rediscoveries and changes in me. I'm a better person for that, but that will be detailed at another time. I also quit using my old blogging service, LiveJournal, and moved over here to blogspot. Don't bother digging up the old blog, it's been locked down. I find I don't miss it, that place is a lot like high school in that people stop caring about the content of their blogs and start caring about who they are "friends" with. I fell into that trap myself, but now I'm out of it.
As for work, I was promoted, and a good part of it was in recognition of being able to step up and take over when my co-worker had left. It was a well-deserved promotion and from the review that have come up since then, I have only gotten better.
To round out the end of the 24th revolution around the sun, I moved into my own place. That right there would have to be the biggest event of the year. Thank god for the person who fucked up and didn't apply for the apartment here because I was able to snap this place up and get the fuck out of dodge. It was also nice to see that I had about eleven people help me move, it made the work easier and it got done faster. From talking to other people, it speaks volumes about how many care for me.
So now I'm here at a quarter century and it feels like the start of a great new adventure. I've started running again, changed my diet for the better, visited a lot more of DC, met some great new people, reconnected with some friends, and discovered new things about myself. I'm wiser and stronger; I've become more assertive, which does piss some people off because they are being called out on their bullshit, but fuck em, I don't need them in my life. I am happy with where things are going now, and I know they're going to get better. I can't wait to see what this next year holds.

Bye Bye Sams!
As you can see, clearly I won't be using Sams Club anytime soon.
I've had the Sams Club membership since I moved here to Maryland. Mike was offered by Wal-Mart a Sams Club account, and they would just deduct some money every paycheck so he wouldn't have to deal with renewing membership, it was basically continuous. Since I was a "household member" I was allowed a complimentary card as well.
The closest Sams to me is in Laurel, and I would occasionally buy groceries from there, and use it to get cheap gas, but it was also enough out of the way that I didn't always want to make the trek. Well last Saturday I went to the Costco in Beltsville with some of my friends from church because they wanted to buy a few things for the after show party later. Since I was basically a Costco virgin, I figured I'd give it a shot. So I went in there for the few minutes we had, and i started to like what I saw, so I made plans with them to come back another day.
Tonight was the trip, complete with wandering down the aisles to see what all they had. They carry a number of the same things that Sams Club does, but they carry some better stuff as well. I was impressed to see the selection of fresh stuff from their bakery, including a tray with a turkey and cheese sandwich and Caesars salad for only $6, or their take and bake pizzas for $8, and they were the size of an extra large at Papa John's. Besides that, I could also buy the gigantic kosher hot dogs for cheaper for what I would pay for them at Sams, and these were the Hebrew National Brand (Sams has some no-name brand). More advantages are that it's closer to my place (5 min drive vs 20 min drive) and there's the cheap gas...currently 2.49 for unleaded, yay! So I finally said that yes, I was going to get a membership, and so I did.
Bye Bye Sams Club and the evil Wal-Mart corporation...hello Costco. I even know how to get to one in Phoenix for when I visit my parents. It also means one more connection to Mike that I don't have anymore.
